I can't post everywhere! There are too many social media apps.
This social media landscape is making me dizzy.
I’ve been an active social media user since you needed a university email to get a Facebook account. During the early 2000s when you needed an invite code for virtually every new social app that launched, I had them and immediately became a fixture of those beta apps. When beta Twitter launched, I fell in love immediately. Twitter was my favorite place to engage and from 2006 to 2016/2017, I enjoyed every single minute of being on that app. For me, the vibe changed and I used it less and less and recently decided to just deactivate my account. I had no plans to ever jump back into that cesspool.
After spending so many years loving sharing and engaging on social media, I am starting to feel burnout…..or maybe it’s more boredom than anything. It all feels so lackluster at times. While I very much enjoy making content and sharing it with like-minded audiences on social media, I realized I am dreading it most days and I’m not sure why.
I used to be so active on bookstagram, but over the last two years, it’s become hard to find the motivation to post there. I joined Threads, Lemon8, and BlueSky in 2023. I was having some fun on Lemon8, but I’ve kind of lost interest in that app, and BlueSky felt SUPER weird so I only pop in over there every couple of months to see if it’s gotten less weird. However, in the last week, BlueSky has become more active since many have fled X/Twitter. So the book community is starting to form over there. I’m very active on Threads although the engagement bait questions annoy me, but the vibe is changing for the better over there, so I’ll keep posting. I have no answers as to why I’m feeling this way or what I need to do to get that spark back.
With the four apps on my roster (bookstagram, Threads, Lemon8, and BlueSky), it still feels like too much. I don’t want to just copy and paste my content across all four apps, but finding different ways to use each app also feels tiresome. I always want to be where the readers are, so I’m trying to figure this out and keep my sanity. Oh, and don’t even ask me about Fable. I’ve had that app on my phone for three years and I have never been able to muster up the desire to even start engaging in that community in a significant way.
I’d love to know how you all have decided to approach your content creation social media activity in this current sea of apps. What apps are you dedicated to posting/engaging on? What’s working and isn’t working for you?
